China defeats Germany 5-3 to grab the 7th place in 2011 Rabo FIH Women’s Champions Trophy
Zhao Yudiao, the 2010 Young Player of the Year award holder, scored three goals and had an assist, as China marked a convincing 5-3 victory over Germany for the 7th-8th spots in the play-off game of the 2011 Rabo FIH Champions Trophy.
The game took place today at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Holland, on July 3.
It is worth mentioning here that China registered its first win of the Champions Trophy and concluded their action at the 7th spot.
Though it was a play-off game, it was filled with alot of thrill and excitement. China and Germany, the 4th and 3rd ranked teams in the international ranking, failed to show impressive performances on the field and secured the last
two positions on the scoreboard.
Unfortunately, the German women for the first time stood at the lowest 8th place in the Champions Trophy, as their earlier least position was 5th in the 2005 edition.
Both the squads opened the game quite slow and exchanged a fair style of passes in the early minutes. Neither German nor Chinese women succeeded to touch the scoreboard in the first 20 minutes of play. However, all the blazing guns started firing in the
next 20 minutes.
China earned a short-corner and tested Sun Sinan, who did not miss the chance and scored the first goal of the day in the 20th minute. The opening goal was enough to ignite the striking-line of China. In a matter of two minutes, Zhao Yudiao started
her action and doubled the tally in 22nd minute of the match. Following that, she scored another goal on a short-corner. In the later time, her team-mate, Qingling Song, notched a goal from the field and expanded the lead up to four goals, 4-0.
After 30 minutes of fast and furious play, the Chinese women started defensive game. But the next few minutes belonged to Germany. Mavers Marie, Janine Beermann and Julia Muller scored one goal each in a short span of 13 minutes and reduced the lead down
to a single goal. Yudiao added another goal from the field and sealed the victory for China at 5-3. With this win, they finished the tournament at the second last place.
