China down Russia 3-0 in FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship
The second match of Pool D in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship took place between China and Russia on Friday, July 22, in Lima, Peru. The match took an hour and 12 minutes to reach its close, with the Chinese team celebrating their clean
sweep over the Russian side.
The Russian coach, Vadim Kiryanov, gave the following statement at the press conference after the match had ended: “The first day does not always tell us how the teams are going to play, but we know that they are all strong.”
The first two sets of the game were pretty one sided as the Russians could not find their stride in order to challenge the Chinese squad. However, the loss of the first two sets of the game enabled the Russians to rally together and step up their game. As
a result, the third set was the most thrilling and competitive but the effort came in too late from the Russian side as the Chinese team was able to win by 25-19, 25-19 and 27-25.
The Chinese captain, Long Cheng, made the following comments at the end of the match: “At the beginning we were stressed, but then we started to relax and the Russians were playing better and better every point.”
On the other hand, the Russian captain, Alina Yaroshik, made the following statement: “We played very focused on the game and we did not want to let go the game.”
The Chinese team put in a coordinated effort to achieve the win but some players stood above the rest. Zhou Yang was able to tally the highest number of points from amongst the two teams after having scored 15 points. The Russian top scorer was Natalia Malykh,
who was able to register 11 points.
The Chinese got hold of the lead at the beginning of the opening set of the game and stuck with it until the very end. The Russians did not prove to be much of a competition for the Chinese as they bagged the initial set at 25-19.
The second set followed the same pattern as the first set with China dominating the proceedings. Despite the fact that the Russians made the set reach a tie at 12-12 and 17-17, China was able to prevail as they secured another win at 25-19.
Russia came to life in the third set of the game and had the lead at 8-7 as well as 16-12. However, Chinese persistence got the set to reach a tie at 24-24, with China eventually winning it at 27-25.
Next in line for the Russian squad is a match against the Dominican Republic while the Chinese will be playing the Japanese.
