  1. Why do people give "thumbs down" to matters of fact, rather than opinion...? Woah has given a perfectly correct answer...

The full title of Taiwan is "Taiwan, Republic of China," because they adopted the constitution of the Republic (founded in 1911 after the Qing dynasty) following the Japanese surrender in 1945 and before the end of the Civil War in 1949, at which point the rest of China became the Peoples' Republic of China. (Taiwan was a Japanese possession between 1895 and 1945).

"Chinese Taipei" reflects a diplomatic compromise; no country recognises Taiwan as an independent country (although Taiwan has not declared independence as there are 1,400 ballistic missiles pointing at it); only 23 countries in Afica, S America and the Caribean recognise the Taiwanese government as the official government of China (ie the Republic of China).

If international organisations, such as the Olympics or the WTO, or the WHO, were to start using the name "Taiwan", China would see it as official recognition of Taiwanese independence.

There is no legal reason why the precedent in Germany, Korea and Veitnam could not be followed, and recognition of a split China. However, the Peoples' Republic is too big, and Taiwan too small, for the US and other UN countries to argue with the PRC, and so the situation is allowed to continue.

  2. Taiwan

    ROC

    Chinese Taipei

It is all the same. They used to be 'China' until the commies pushed them out of the mainland to Formosa.

And the guy above is incorrect. Almost nobody recognizes Taiwan.

  3. It's Taiwan. A country threatened by China since 1949. Poor Taiwaneses.

  4. Politics, pure and simple.  China is a hungry dragon that cannot stand facing up to facts.  Communism cannot thrive in a free market.

  5. Yeah, China still claims that Taiwan is their territory, even the whole world recognizes it as independent.

  6. It's Taiwan.  People's Republic of China doesn't recognize the independence of Taiwan.

  7. Someday perhaps Taiwan will invade and re-take the mainland.

Don't laugh - there are a lot of people in "Chinese Taipei" who long for such a day.

  8. Taipei [Taiwan] is where the Nationalist [non-Communist] Government were set up after WW2.

  9. Chinese Taipei is Taiwan, (formerly Formosa after Portuguese sailors named it Beautiful Island in the 16th C).

There are indigenous tribes on the island which has a mixed history. Japanese/Dutch rule amongst others.

In 1949 the defeated Kuomingtang forces fled to the island after losing the 'civil war' in which the communists took control of the mainland.

The war, technically never finished, as the island was never invaded and captured.

Older folks speak Japanese too, as it was taught during the Japanese occupation of the islands in the Japanese expansionism before WW2. Begining c1870.

Taiwan can't be recognised by many countries seeing as China developed a 'One China' policy meaning that if for example the UN recognise Taiwan as independent, then China will pull out, of the UN and other humanitarian and trade pacts.

Many people in Taiwan see themselves as Taiwanese first and ethnically Chinese second.
