China holds athletes families at gunpoint?

Question

I have heard rumors in the past about athletes competing in the olympics (not in china) are told that the government will kill their families if they do not return. Can someone point me in the right direction of where I can get more information about this? Not looking for opinions, just a source of more information

That sounds like it would come out of a country like the former Soviet Union, China, Cuba, N. Korea, N. Vietnam, even the former East Germany.  People are known to defect from these communist-run countries and to hold an athlete's family "hostage" would help ensure the athlete's return.
