China sweeps Algeria on first day of FIVB Women’s World Cup - Volleyball news
The FIVB Women’s World Cup started off today, November 4, in Hiroshima, Japan. The first day saw the Chinese squad take on Algerians as the Chinese dominated their opponents by 3-0.
Not only did the Chinese make a win after bagging three back to back sets, they were able to overcome the Algerians in each set of the match. The first set of the match saw both the teams start of a bit timidly but before long, the Chinese were able to
swing the momentum towards themselves and bag a win. The second set of the match saw the efforts of the Algerians slacken further as they put up a half hearted effort which did not stop the forceful play of the Chinese in securing another win. With two sets
down, the Algerians showed some spark in the third set but the effort came in too late and they were unable to take the match to a fourth frame.
The coach of the Chinese team, Wang Yimei, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “Today was our first match in the World Cup and it was a little hard to get accustomed
to the stadium, but we’ll be used to it. But we cannot miss a chance to make the London Olympics. We’re a young team, but we have a lot of experience. This will certainly help us in upcoming matches and tomorrow.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Algerian team, Ahmed Boukacem, shared his feelings in this way: “We did our best in first match, but its so difficult to play a team like China. As our captain said, we haven’t quite overcome the jet lag. But we look forward
to doing better tomorrow.”
The start of the first set of the game saw both teams almost level and as the first technical time out was reached, the Chinese had a slight lead of 8-5. After the two sides came back onto the courts, the Chinese were able to extend their advantage and go
on a lead of 13-7. After that point, the Chinese sped on to grab the last of the 10 points out of a total of 11.
Despite the fact that both the sides did errors in the second set’s beginning, the Chinese were able to secure a comfortable lead at 8-3 which they extended till 20-10 and got a set win at 25-14.
The third set of the game was close at 12-11, in favour of the Chinese but China did not let it drag on too long and sped to a win at 25-19.
