China: the undisputed leader in the prestigious event of the World Badminton Championships
China has won the most number of medals in the World Badminton Championships event, which is the most prestigious tournament after Olympics in the game. Thirteen countries so far have enjoyed the honour of hosting this mega event. This tournament was first
held in 1977 and 18 editions have been organised by 2010. This is an individual event and entertains an open participation from all countries of the world.
The initial two events were organised after a three-year interval, however, since 1983, it was decided by the International Badminton Federation that the tournament would be organised once in every two years. In 2005, the rule was changed again and it was
announced that the mega event will be held once in every year.
The hosting nations that have organised the Badminton World Championships so far are Sweden (1977), Indonesia (1980, 89), Denmark (1983, 91, 99), Canada (1985), China (1987), England (1993, 2003), Switzerland (1995), Scotland (1997), Spain (2001, 2006),
United States of America (2005), Malaysia (2007), India (2009) and France (2010).
England will host this event for the third time this year, as the 19th Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships will be held in Wembley, London, from August 8-14.
In the 1977 and 1980 World Championships, China was unable to win any gold medal in any category of the game. Denmark and Indonesia were the best nations, winning medals in these two championships. China made their presence felt in this event in 1983, when
two gold medals were claimed by Chinese shuttlers.
Then, China won all of the five gold medals in the World Championships of 1987 and again in 2010, the same results were produced by the incredible shuttlers of the country.
Currently, China is clearly leading the table by winning 48 gold medals. The second highest medal winning country is Indonesia, having 18 to their credit. Denmark, a superb badminton playing country has won 10 gold medals and Korea is not far behind with
a tally of nine, in the World Championships.
England has won three gold medals in the mega event so far. The table proves the unchallenging supremacy of China that has no other country even close to their achievements.
Malaysia is yet to win any gold medal in the mega event, despite their strong Badminton culture. Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei is the current World Number One who has won numerous titles, but he is yet to break the dead lock in the World Championships. He has
never passed the semi-final stage of the tournament. He is optimistic to win the title this year, as he is playing at his best.
In the 2011 BWF World Championships, top shuttlers from all corners of the globe will be contesting for the title. Malaysia has a strong chance to end their bad run in the event, as the current top ranked Chong Wei will hopefully be the top contestant over
there.
China will also contest for achieving another milestone as it has the best shuttlers in all categories on their side. Defending Champion, Chen Jin of China and his compatriot and former three times world champion and reigning Olympic Champion, Lin Dan, will
also be present to claim the title.
