  1. Manchuria was a civilized, but not industrialized nation.  There was coal mining with forced labor for those who had committed crimes in other provinces being granted small houses near the mine. The crude barbarian Russian boors kept coming over the border to consume "places in the culture" in Harbin.  If there were pots, pans or pails for sale for the miners the Russians would confiscate it and if there was food for sale they wanted that.  Some had long pony tails, black jackets, and jens like the fishermen in the US used to do and the Russians  got jealous and said they had to wear a uniform.   So the Chinese asked foreign troops in to expel the invaders, both Russian and Japanese.

  2. Much of China was occupied by the Japanese during this time period (esp Manchuria and along the coast through to Nanjing).  They were emerging from a feaudalistic society, while the USSR was building up manufacturing capability during this period under Stalin.  The only similarity I can see is that possibly millions of people died in both countries.  The communists in China were active but had not driven out the Kuomingtang until late in the 40s.

  3. Not much except they were both imperialistic and expansionist.  Communism came to China after WW2.
