China’s Ding Junhui fined by world snooker body for failure to reveal illness in October 2010
Chinese snooker star Ding Junhui has been fined £2,000 by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association for failing to notify the tournament officials about his illness before his match against compatriot Liang Wenbo in the Euro Players Tour Championship
2010-11 Event 3.
Ding got whitewashed at the hands of Wenbo with the score line of 4-0 in the event that took place at Walter-Kobel-Sporthalle in Russelsheim, Germany in October 2010. The world number four failed to disclose that he was unfit to compete properly at the event.
The 24-year-old Chinese could not perform at his usual high standards in his match against Liang Wenbo on 23 October, 2010. The tournament organisers took a quick action and reported his conduct to WPBSA, which handed it to the Disciplinary Committee to
investigate the matter.
Ding Junhui was notified about the Association’s concern upon the matter. He responded immediately to the notification and not only apologised but also explained that he could not perform according to his standards due to the illness.
The two-time UK Championship winner, Ding, did not inform the tournament officials about his condition on time and continued playing the game in circumstances where he should otherwise have pulled out of the match.
The committee submitted its report to the Association which remarked that the Chinese player’s un-notified health problem not only affected his repute but the respect of the game too.
However, the Disciplinary Committee said that the player responded promptly and apologised on his conduct. The Association imposed a £2,000 fine on Ding Junhui, only because this was the first time the Chinese has violated discipline.
On the other hand, Ding agreed to the findings of the Disciplinary Committee and accepted the responsibility of his actions in the event.
The action taken by the Association can serve as a warning for all snooker players that they inform the event organisers and tournament officials about any circumstances, health or otherwise, which can affect their performance during the events.
