China’s Ding Junhui thrilled after winning first Welsh title beating Mark Selby in final: 2012 Welsh Open
A consistent performance from the former two-time UK Championship winner, China’s Ding Junhui brought him on top of the world renowned potters at the Newport Centre arena in Newport.
The Chinese was outstanding against the World Number one, England’s Mark Selby in the final of 2012 Welsh Open and managed to win his first Welsh title by the score line of 9-6.
The final encounter was quite scrappy and crucial in the first two sessions and it seemed difficult to determine the winner until Junhui grabbed a two-frame lead at the end of second session. The two-frame lead was not a big margin for the Englishman to
worry about and he capitalised convincingly in the third session.
However, the Star of the East changed the face of the game with a couple of important breakthroughs. He clinched back-to-back frame victories in the final session firing two cracking knocks of 124 and 130. These two frame wins dragged the match into the
Chinese Sensation’s favour.
The Jester from Leicester did try to comprehend the situation with his scintillating near-maximum break of 145 points but it went all in vain when the 24-year-old Junhui took the next frame to seal his title successfully. The world number seven shook hands
with Terry Camilleri, the referee of the match, and waved his fans gathered at the arena after claiming his seventh major ranking title.
Speaking to the World Snooker after holding the Welsh glory, Junhui said, “It feels great. I was nervous during the final and missed a few chances. Mark kept the pressure on me and it was a hard game. In practice I have been feeling good and playing like
I was a few years ago.”
The Jiangsu potter added, “It's much better for me than before. I bought the house in Sheffield two days ago, I have just got the keys. I will put a snooker table in the garage so I can play on my own if I am not going to the Academy. I can park the car
outside, the table is more important!”
The Wuxi cueman is now looking forward to make his presence felt in the upcoming 2012 World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. So far in his career, he has not won a single World Championship nor has he ever reached the final encounter
of the Crucible crown.
