China’s Du Pengyu and Bao Chunlai move into the pre-quarterfinals of Badminton Asia Championships 2011
China’s Du Pengyu and Bao Chunlai booked their place in the pre-quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships 2011. Both players defeated their opponents with considerable ease in the men’s singles second round, on Wednesday, April 20.
The sixth seed Pengyu tamed Kazumasa Sakai of Japan in straight sets, whereas the seventh seed Chunlai crushed Tien Chen Chou of Chinese Taipei in a similar fashion.
The young Chinese shuttler, Pengyu, has grown to be a competitive player at international level. He proved his worth against the Japanese by playing a flawless game in the second round of men’s singles. In the opening set, Pengyu remained far ahead of the
opponent throughout the set by playing an attacking game.
Kazumasa tried to break the aggression of the Chinese but failed as Pengyu was hitting the bird on the side lines of the court. The sixth seed won the opening set with a stunning margin of 21-7, in just 17 minutes.
In the second game, Kazumasa changed his tactics and became quicker at the net. He avoided lifting the bird high in the air that blocked the aggressive run of the Chinese. Kazumasa was leading by an 11-9 margin at the end of the first half of the set.
After the interval, Pengyu geared up his speed and levelled the score at 18-18. The score reached at 21-21 where the Chinese played better and managed to win the remaining points in a row to win the set with a tight margin of 22-21, in 26 minutes. The final
score of this 43-minute match was, 21-7 and 23-21.
In another men’s singles match, Chunlai showed no mercy to Tien Chen and beat him in straight games. In the first set, the seventh seed remained on the driving seat and spent only 13 minutes to win the set with an impressive margin of 21-8.
In the second set, Tien Chen played a better game but still could not get the better of the Chinese. Chunlai consumed only 17 minutes to grab the second game 21-17. The final score of this 30-minute straight-set match was, 21-8 and 21-17.
In the pre-quarterfinal matches, Pengyu will fight against Daren Liew of Malaysia, whereas Chunlai will face the 15th seed, Yan Kit Chan of Hong Kong.
