China’s Xiao Guodong hits an upset win against England’s Judd Trump in 2011-12 PTC Grand Finals
Snooker fans at the Bailey Allen Hall arena in Galway, Ireland saw another major upset of the 2011-12 Players Tour Championship (PTC) Grand Finals as China’s Xiao Guodong totally outplayed the 2011 China Open winner, England’s Judd Trump in the second round
of the event. The Chinese young potter cruised into an easy win over the Englishman by the score line of 4-2.
Guodong was considered an underdog for the PTC Grand finals but the 23-year-old showed great determination during his campaign and has now made his way successfully into the quarter-final stage of the tournament compiling easy wins over Trump and Dominic
Dale. Trump, on the other hand, was not able to play according to the standards and slipped down easily.
The World Number 51 remained focused from the start and played carefully trying not to give any opportunity to the World Number three. He avoided making silly mistakes and played sensibly throughout the game to hit the winning spot. The young Chinese fires
some outstanding knocks during the match up and nudged his opponent down by 4-2.
Speaking to World Snooker after his match, Guodong said, “I've been playing for five years and this will be my first quarter-final. I'm surprised because it has happened now when I am playing with a broken hand. Maybe I should break something before every
tournament! I haven't even been able to practise because the doctor told me to rest.”
He added, “Judd didn't play as well as he can today but he is a very good player so it was still hard to win. I tried not to think about the money or ranking points, I just wanted to win the match. I will try to think the same way in my next match.”
The 23-year-old Guodong lead the match in the first session by 3-1 after compiling a couple of decent breaks of 100 and 66. At the start of Session 2, Trump jumped back into the game with the fifth frame win but it did not help him as the Chinese breezed
into the sixth frame win with a 63-point classy knock to win the match by 4-2 eventually.
