Question:

Chinchilla Male and Female

I bought a 3 month old Chinchilla about 6-7 months ago. I feel that she is old enough now to get a mate because I want to breed her. I went and bought a handsome proven male breeder, but she doesn't accept him. She jumps on him and bites him.

I set their cages next to each other for a few days, then switched them so they could smell each other in teh cages, but then when i put her up to his cage closer, she'd bite through the bars.

I kept trying everyday till she didn't bite at him. So i let them out on my floor so I could get at them if something happened. He'd sniff her but she'd just start biting again.

Does anyone have any advice?

  1. Actually, that's perfectly normal.

When chinchillas mate, they chase each other around and romp. They bite (around the neck area) and pull fur out.

I suggest doing what you're doing, it's normal behavior. If your female gets on her end legs and sprays him, then she rejects him.

It only takes three seconds for a chin to mate, so it could have already happened.

They are more active in the night, so leave them together int he same cage for a couple nights. If his fur seems wet, then he's been sprayed. If not, then I promise it's just how chins mate.

    They get a little rough!

  2. I Have 2 Chinchillas And They Are Both Female But, I Had A Male Which Died and They Had A Baby& He Died A Week After The Baby Was Born. They Did Not Like Eachother At First. Move Them In Together In The Cage & See What Happens She Will Be Preganet efore You Kno It (:

    Good Luck!
