I'm saving up money for something (bear with me I'm 14,no job) I want to save up for a chinchilla a cage an air conditioner, dust baths, food, bedding, etc. I know about the heat thing and I don't know if they get to cold. I live in Pennsylvania. They live in the Andes Mountains of Chili in natural habitat. If you could give me a good breeder that would be nice. I have had other rodents and think I'm prepared for this bouncy critter.

  1. No. Chinchillas need a constant temperature. If the temperature changes too much and too often, it will kill them. So sheds and garages make horrible places to keep them.

If you do find a better place to keep one, please look into adopting. You can often find an already bonded pair for as little as $130, with single animal adoption being around $60 or $65. There are so many unwanted chinchillas out there that really need homes, so please think about adopting. Do remember that chinchillas are best kept in pairs because they are social animals. Same s*x pairs are the best, so you don't end up with any more unwanted babies.

Though since you're only 14, I think it's necessary I ask what will you do with your chinchilla later in life? They can live anywhere from 10-20 years. What if you realize in a few years that a chinchilla isn't what you expected? What if you go to college and can't take your chinchillla with you?

  2. I would suggest going to a petstore. i have no clue on the price of the chinchillas themselves. heres what you'll need for them though. this is the petsmart pricing.

your total if you get this list will be around $115. that is without the chinchilla. plus you will have to buy the food & bedding on a monthly basis. some of the stuff on the list is only available online though. i would suggest keeping them in a heated house in the winter if you can find room.

  3. I wouldn't put it in a shed,it'd require a lot of work to make it safe. Try joining wunderchins.com/bbs

  4. Petsmart has chinchillas that are less expensive.
