I'm getting a chinchilla & have done lots of research, but I'd like to know other people's opinions on these animals.

Do they smell(odor-wise)?

What are the pros/cons?

Thank you!

  1. Ohh. Lol i have a chinchilla :] His names "Hollister" Yeah, i know. lol. okay they don't really have that much odor, all they need is a bath. Bath is dust, not water. And, they are very friendly, and nice. Sometimes they bark, and it gets very annoying, cause that means they want you to go get them, or they want their moms. Okay, and chinchillas can be very fun also. :] Hope i helped<3

    P.S. don't forget to ask the person about if the chinchilla's a boy/girl. Cause i did, but now i know he's a boy :]

  2. Chinchillas themselves do not smell. However, if their cage isn't cleaned on a weekly basis, the cage will start to smell, and it can get pretty bad.

    Cons:

-They don't like to be held or petted.

    -They chew on everything.

    -They need a large cage.

-They can make a lot of noise at night.

    -They can overheat easily.

    -They will p**p everywhere.

-Their p**p will end up everywhere around the cage.

    -They can be quite costly.

    -They can get bored easily.

-They need quiet during the day.

    -They shouldn't be taken outside.

-They are not trainable, including potty trainable.

-The dust bast dust will end up everywhere.

-Finding a vet that can treat chinchillas may be hard to find where you live.

    -Vet bills are expensive.

    Pros:

    -They will bond with you.

    -They're fun to watch.

    -They're soft and beautiful.

    -They don't smell.

-They don't require a bath in water.

And depending on how you look at it:

-They can live anywhere from 10-20 years.

-They are social and are best kept in pairs.

    -They're nocturnal.

Owning chinchillas has been a very rewarding experience, even though they do take a lot of work. If you do decide that a chinchilla is right for you, remember to be patient, because it will pay off in the end. =]

  3. I owned a chinchilla for 8 years!

They do not smell, with frequent dust baths they stay soft and fluffy!

They do require a somewhat warm room. They don't always like to be handled. Mine was almost 1 when i got him so he wasn't used to people holding him.

They love to run around the house!

They need a large cage because they like to climb and jump, they also like a hiding place.

They are nocturnal, so if you are keeping them in your room, you will hear them at night.

Mine sometimes squawked. I'm not sure if it was a male thing or what. It kinda sounded like a bullfrog!

You must provide them things to chew on. They are like hamsters, their teeth continue to grow so they must grind them down!

They are great pets. I miss my little boy :(
