I am planning to learn Mandarin or Cantonese. I finally decided to learn Mandarin due to the fact that it is spoken in mainland China.

However i wanted to ask are there more TV Soaps and Films made in the Mandarin Language or Cantonese? I am interested in watching Chinese tv and films so want to learn the dialect which has the better/developed entertainment industry.

Thanks

  1. Undoubtedly Mandarin.

  2. in HK, all our TV programs in chinese channels r cantonese. of cos we hv eng channels. anyway, in guangdong province... we all speak cantonese. but overall in China, ppl communicate in mandarin mainly. so yes, u got to learn mandarin instead of cantonese. n mandarin hv phonetic...so more easy to learn.

  3. I recommend Zhang Guo Li - his TV series focus alot on modern China - and also the dynasties.  His stories are entertaining with meaning behind them and they all have historical elements of China as part of his stories.  His acting is great (he stars alot with his wife and son) and generally, just a job well done.  And his mandarin is beautiful - he's a mainlander and I think his wife is from Beijing.
