Chinese Taipei Open: Nguyen Tien Minh beats Hsuan Yi Hsueh to enter into Men’s Singles quarter-final
Nguyen Tien Minh, the top seed of Taiwan managed a quarter-final berth after beating Chinese Taipei’s Hsuan Yi Hsueh in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 at the 2011 Chinese Taipei Open, on Thursday, September 8, in Chinese Taipei.
World Number 7, Tien Minh had to dig deep into his reserves to bring out impressive strokes to beat the Taipei shuttler in a rubber-set game which entertained the local crowd with the top quality badminton for 56 minutes. The local shuttler put up a terrific
show of best badminton in the first set against the higher ranked Vietnamese, but lost the both following sets.
Yi Hsueh made his experienced rival work really hard in the opening game by putting everything he had in the match. Despite working hard and putting extra speed in the match, Tien Minh failed to dominate the game in the opening set of the math as his local
challenger was everywhere in the court. The top seed lost the first game with a small margin of 19-21, in 24 minutes.
Stung with loss of the first game, Tien Minh played stunning badminton in the second set. He became so fast at the net that Yi Hsueh failed to anticipate the deceptive strokes of the top seed. The Vietnamese executed beautiful jump smashes on both sides
of Yi Hsueh and earned many points because of the accuracy in his strokes. He levelled the match by bagging the game with the score of 21-13, in 18 minutes.
The deciding set of this close contest was not that interesting for the local crowd as the local shuttler failed to continue his impressive play against the top seed. Tien Minh played to his maximum speed to put pressure on his opponent throughout the deciding
game. He won the final set in a dominating manner with the one-sided score of 21-9, in just 14 minutes. The 56-minute match ended with a 19-21, 21-13 and 21-9 score on the board.
In the Men’s Singles quarter-final battle, Tien Minh will take on Shon Wan Ho of Korea, who defeated Simon Santoso of Indonesia in their round-of-16 match.
