Chinese Taipei Open: Nguyen Tien Minh overwhelms Shon Wan Ho in the Men’s Singles quarter-final
Nguyen Tien Minh, the tops seed in the event from Vietnam had to dig deep into their reserves to get rid of Korea’s Shon Wan Ho in the Men’s Singles quarter-final of the 2011 Chinese Taipei Open, in Chinese Taipei, on Friday, September 9.
World Number Seven shuttler, Tien Minh is looking for his second consecutive title as he won last month’s 2011 Vietnam Open Grand Prix. He played a shaky game in the opening set but found the flow in the second game and clinched the following both sets.
The top seed took 67 minutes to chuck out Wan Ho in a three-set fight.
This match was one of the most thrilling contests of the day in which both shuttlers displayed an attacking game. They progressed closely without playing hasty strokes. The exchange of long rallies disturbed the Vietnamese and he started to target the side
lines of the court for making the rallies short.
Tien Minh’s hasty strokes put him behind his opponent as he made many errors and lost the opening game with the score of 18-21 in 29 minutes.
The following game was also thrilling as both shuttlers tried to control the rallies by executing attacking strokes. Once again the exchange of long rallies increased the interest of the local crowd, however, this time Tien Minh remained patient and waited
for the right chance to bury the bird in his rival’s court. His patience earned him a win in the second set with a 21-15 margin, in 23 minutes.
In the final set of this wonderful match, Tien Minh showed his class by playing on a different level. The Korean failed to maintain his speed and became a little slow in picking the bird. This delay in returning the bird helped Tien Minh to dominate the
game and he ended it in just 15 minutes with a wonderful 21-11 margin. The concluding result of this rubber-set Men’s Singles wonderful battle was 18-21, 21-15 and 21-11.
In the Men’s Singles semi-final, Tien Minh will face Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, who crushed Hong Kong’s Nan Wei in the quarter-final.
