Chinese Taipei Open: Yi Ju Chiu topples Ngan Yi Cheung in the Women’s Singles qualifying round
Chinese Taipei’s shuttler, Yi Ju Chiu cleared her first hurdle as she toppled Hong Kong’s Ngan Yi Cheung in the Women’s Singles qualifying round of the 2011 Chinese Taipei Open, at Sinjhuang City, in Chinese Taipei, on Tuesday, September 6.
The opening match took just 29 minutes to prove the supremacy of the local shuttler over Yi Cheung, as Ju Chiu finished off the battle in straight games. She won the first game without any considerable effort but managed to win the second game with a narrow
margin after a wonderful fight.
In the opening set of the match, the Taipei shuttler opened her campaign in scintillating fashion as she took no time in creating a wonderful lead in the opening half of the set. Her impressive fast drop shots forced her opponent to lean forward which helped
her in manipulating the rear court area. She was in a good position at the end of the opening half in the first game, when she managed a lead of 11-6.
After the break, Yi Cheung anticipated the drop shots of her rival and started to dominate at the net. However, Ju Chiu accelerated her speed to execute cross-court attacking lobs and remained successful in creating gaps in her challenger’s court. Her powerful
smashes perfectly landed in the gaps and she finished off the first game by taking just 13 minutes with the score of 21-14.
In the following game of this qualifying-round battle, the contest became quite interesting as both shuttlers were not making any error this time. The score from both sides progressed closely as they were playing at the same level and maintained high pace
in the rallies.
In the concluding part of the match, both shuttlers tried to manage a small lead but failed and the score reached at 20-20. At this crucial stage, Ju Chiu played remarkable badminton and finished off the match by scoring two successive points and won the
set with a margin of 22-20, in 16 minutes. This 29-minute qualifying-round contest ended with a 21-14 and 22-20 margin on the score board.
