Chinese Taipei clinches success in tournament opener – Volleyball News
During the first day of the competition at the 16th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship, the hosts, Chinese Taipei, demonstrated a spectacular show of volleyball and swept the feet of the Indonesian team in three sets (25-8, 25-12, and
25-15). The match was held at the National Taiwan University Gym on Thursday, September 15, as Chinese Taipei bagged three points for winning the first fixture in Pool A.
Home team started out with aggressive attacks in the first set. Chen Wan Ting set pace for of Chinese Taipei and scored early points of the game. Indonesia, on the other hand, suffered the set back due to weak defence and trailed behind with 4 points at
the first technical timeout, 4-8. The captain girl of Taipei, Teng Yen Min, stormed opponent’s half with swift spikes and added consecutive points. Indonesia progressed at slow pace and could only score 8 points in the opening set. Therefore, it took Chinese
Taipei only 18 minutes to secure the first set of the game at 25-8.
The hosts dominated the second set as well and used strong attack by left-handed ace spiker Chen Wan Ting. She showed no mercy and spiked the ball so hard that it promptly landed on the opposite side. Anyhow, Indonesia managed to hit back courageously as
the duo of Lin Chun Yi and Tsai Yin Feng put up combined effort and put away convincing shots. The counter attacks of Lin and Yin helped Indonesia to create a bit of trouble for Taipei squad but the hosts controlled the situation very soon. They grasped the
game plan of opponents and broke their rhythm with solid defence. Second set also came successful for Chinese Taipei at 25-12 and strengthened their grip on the game with 2-0 lead.
Indonesia was dragged under the dark clouds of uncertainty after the loss of two sets in row. They played under pressure and get caught in a flurry of unforced errors. On contrary, Chinese Taipei remained remarkably consistent and went further ahead. Third
set was closed off at 25-15 and match result was out in 58th minute. Chinese Taipei claimed the first win of the tournament and climbed up to the top position in pool A ranking.
The mentor of Chinese Taipei, Mr. Norimasa Sakakuchi from Japan, was not satisfied with his team’s performance as he believed they could have done a better job. However, he urged his players to play with strong will in the next match. The winning Captain
Teng Yen Min had the similar thought to share. He said: “We did not play to our full capacity today, but we will surely do better and better in the following matches.”
The hosts will return to action on Friday as they will take on the pool rival Iran in the next match. Likewise, Indonesia will put up against Iran on Saturday and if they fail to win the second match, they will be disqualified.
