Chinese Taipei falls to Peru in three sets – Volleyball news
Women’s teams from Chinese Taipei and Peru met in an Olympic qualifying match, which took place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym on Tuesday.
Peruvian ladies proved to be better in every aspect of the game and downed the rivals in three sets. They posted 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) victory over Chinese Taipei in 73 minutes. Peru claimed first win in the tournament, while CT failed to break the ice.
Karla Ortiz played a vital role in Peru’s victory. She displayed an incredible effort and totalled 13 points. Likewise, her teammates Carla Rueda and Diana Soto contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Chen Wan Ting supported Chinese Taipei with 13 but she could not lead her team to success.
Ambitious Peruvian team jumped out of the gate and added quick points to build a lead of 8-4 at the first technical timeout. Peru led the score and further stretched the gap of points. Chinese Taipei, on the other hand, used different combinations of players
but could not catch up with the competitors. With better attack and defence, Peru cruised past to 24-19 win in the opening stanza.
Success in the first set enabled Peru to make a strong opening in the following frame. Peru followed the same game plan and produced powerful spikes. Chinese Taipei could not chase the score at first mandatory stop but managed to hit the equalizer at 12-all.
Peru responded right away and retook the lead. Afterwards, Chinese Taipei made frequent attempts but could not avoid defeat in second set, 20-25.
Peru dominated in the third set as well and eventually put an end to the tussleby sending 25-20 on board.
Luca Cristofani, coach of Peru shared his thoughts at the post-match press conference. He stated, “We played well enough today but lacked consistency. We had lapses of four points but we could recover. We won't be able to do that against teams like Russia
and Cuba. We need to find a rhythm and be more consistent. We had two goals coming here: qualify for the Olympics and set the new team for the next four years. We need four more years to become one of the best eight teams in the world.”
Meanwhile, the mentor of Chinese Taipei Norimasa Sakakuchi commented, “It was not the opponent but we. We made a lot of mistakes at key points. This is why we couldn't win.”
There is almost two months’ time left in the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. In the women’s volleyball, only four slots are empty that will be captured by the winners of the on-going joint Asia Continental and World Olympic Qualification Tournament.
Chinese Taipei, Serbia, Russia, Cuba Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Peru are on board to vie for the Olympic slots. Check back to find out more about the event.
