Chinese Taipei secures 5th position in 16th Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship
The 5th position match of the 16th Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship took place on the 23rd of September between the Chinese Taipei team and DPR Korea. The match, which was played in Taipei, took four sets to declare the
home squad the 5th place winners.
The host team did not perform well in the opening set of the match and DPR Korea was able to earn a dominating first set win. However, the Chinese Taipei bounced back in the second set and equalised the match by bagging the second frame at the same score
as they had lost the first one. The third set saw both teams go on neck to neck with each other but eventually Chinese Taipei were able to propel themselves forwards to secure the frame. DPR Korea put in a half-hearted effort in the fourth set and the Chinese
Taipei team took the match at the following final set scores: 17-25, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-18.
The head coach of the Chinese Taipei team, Norimasa Sakakuchi, made the following comments at the press conference after his team had won the match: “The result was not satisfactory. As the host, we expected to achieve higher position and aimed at entering
the final four. I hope this unsatisfactory experience to be a great stimulation that keeps my players forward.”
The DPR Koreans came out strong in the opening set of the game and put pressure on the Chinese Taipei team by making use of their powerful attacking tactics. On the other hand, the Chinese Taipei team was having trouble with their reception and this got
the DPR Koreans to the first technical time out with a lead of 8-1. The Chinese Taipei squad managed to close in the gap somewhat but the Koreans were still up ahead at 16-11 at the second technical time out. It was only a matter of time before the Koreans
bagged the first set at 25-17.
The second set of the game saw the Chinese Taipei come out as a rejuvenated team and they were able to match the play of the Koreans, making the set reach a tie at 13-13. Gradually, the Chinese Taipei managed to push past their rivals and secure the set
at 25-17.
The third set was tied at 14-14 but eventually the Koreans lagged behind and Chinese Taipei won it at 25-20. The fourth set was pretty much one sided and ended in an anticipated Chinese Taipei win at 25-18.
Even though the DPR Koreans lost the match, one of their players, Jong Jin Sim, was able to score the highest number of points for her team at 19 while on the Chinese Taipei side, the highest scorer was Lin Chun Yi who tallied 18 points for her team.
