Chinese Taipei tames India to surge into quarter-finals of German Open
Chinese Taipei advanced to quarter-finals as its female duo tamed Indian couple in the German Open, yesterday.
The Taipei women doubles team Cheng Wen Hsing- Chien Yu Chin beat their Indian opponent duo Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa with the final score of 21-14, 17-21 and 21-12 on the board.
The World Number eight pair Wen Hsing- Chien Yu Chin dominated in most part of the 46-minute tussle with relatively low ranked World Number 19 Indian pair and buried the Indian solo hope for trophy in the German Open.
The duo of Wen Hsing- Yu Chin set the foundation by clinching the first set with a distinctive lead of 21-14 on the score sheets. The Indian couple turned pale against their powerful attacks and could not stop their Taipei rivals from establishing the crucial
1-0 lead.
But first set loss did not harm the Indian pair Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa much and they made the balance right by levelling the lead 1-1.
The Taipei shuttlers tried to catch their Indian challengers on the scoreboard but their small steps could not match the Indian leaps and they kept trailing all way which cost them second match point.
The Taipei shuttlers frittered away their own efforts in first set and lost the golden chance of straight-set victory over India with scorers showing final figures of 17-21 on scorecards.
Both teams were standing at same level and the final set turned into survival of the fittest war. The Taipei female couple made a swift charge and scored some important points in the beginning but the Indians also replied with couple of good rallies.
This cliff-hanging contest finally ended in Chinese Taipei’s favour as its female duo Wen Hsing- Yu Chin hammered the Indian rivals Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa with convincing margin of 21-12.
This concluded their 2-1 victory over India and they successfully paved their path to the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles event.
The Taipei duo will now try to prove their guts against second seeds Japanese pair Mizuki Fujii- Reika Kakiiwa to escort their country to glory in the German Open Grand Prix Gold 2012.
