Chinese boxers advance in Asiad
Three Chinese boxers progressed to the next round of their respective divisions in the 2010 Asian Games at the Foshan Gymnasium.
Chang Yong started the day with a 14-0 thrashing of Turkmenistan's Faruh Yomudov in the 52kg division. He will next face North Korea's Pak Jong-chol, who beat Jordan's Mohammad Alwadi 10-2.
Zhang Zhilei was the next to see action and the Beijing Olympics silver medallist did not disappoint. He posted a 5-3 win over Syria’s Soumar Ghossoun to reach the semi-finals of the super heavyweight
division. Zhang will take on India's Paramjeet Samota for a place in the final. The Indian stopped South Korea’s Park Sung-keun in the second round of their bout.
The other semi-final will pit Iran's Roohollah Hosseini against Kazakhstan's Ivan Dychko. Hosseini blanked Pakistan's Meer Wais Khan 4-0 while Dychko ditched Uzbek Sardor Abdullaev 8-1.
Zhang Jiawei made it three victories in a row for the hosts when he defeated Tajikistan's Anvar Yunusov 6-3 in the 56kg category.
Awaiting him in the quarterfinals is Uzbekistan's Shayimov Orzubek, who stopped Pakistan's Naimatullah Naimatullah.
The Philippines was also rejoicing on Thursday, thanks to brothers Rey and Victorio Saludar.
Rey knocked out Bhutan’s Kinley Gyeltshen in the first round of their bout in the 52kg division. The South Cotabato native dropped his opponent with a left straight, prompting the referee to stop the bout
at the 1:34 mark of the opening round.
Rey will next battle Nepal's Puran Rai, a 6-1 winner over Timor Leste's Artemio de Conceicao.
Victorio followed his older brother into the next phase after posting an 8-1 victory over Malaysian Mohd Redzuan Muhammad Fuad in the 49kg class. His next opponent is Indian Amandeep Singh, who stopped
Saudi Arabian Fahad Ahme Alfaifi.
In other bouts in the 52kg division, Katsuaki Susa of Japan walloped Leong Son Keong of Macau 17-0; Lin Yu Che of Chinese Taipei ousted Nguyen Van Hai of Vietnam 5-3; Shahriyor Isakov of Uzbekistan won
via count-back over Meder Mamakeev of Kyrgyzstan; while Suranjoy Singh Mayengbam of India beat Kim Ju-seong of South Korea 8-6.
In the 56kg division, North Korea's Ri Myong-son eliminated Qatar's Abdullatef Sadiq 5-1; Japan's Shimizu Satoshi defeated India's Chhote Lal Yaday 7-4; 2004 Athens Olympic silver medallist Worapoj Petchkoom
of Thailand survived Mongolian Enkhjargal Iderkhuu 2-1; Iran's Omran Akbari ousted Turkmenistan's Allaberdy Ishankuliyev 10-1.
Also marching on was Bhutan's Phub Sigyel, who upset Kazakhstan's Daniyar Tulegenov 6-3. Phub will shoot for a semi-final berth against Syria’s Wessam Salamana, who beat South Korean Lee Jin-young.
