Chinese dominance of Badminton – Badminton Feature – Part 1
If anyone has ever followed competitive badminton over the past few years it is not hard to notice that the sport is dominated by China. Their players are ranked at the top of almost every table known. Once mighty badminton nations like Indonesia, Malaysia
and South Korea are seemingly slipping down the rankings. Their players are not getting it done on the court during the International Tournaments.
Many fans of badminton often question as to how China can not only dominate but continually produce some of the most dynamic and powerful players in the sport. Of course we have all heard of China’s training camps which take children in at a very young age
and provide coaching on a continual basis to create the highest quality badminton players. However, there has to be much more than just a training camp to create top players.
The sheer size and population of China is one of the key components of the country’s dominance in badminton. There are over a billion people in China, this provides for a massive group of athletes. Even if you take just a few percent of this population that
might play badminton, we are talking about a couple million athletes. Thus, the more people you have to pick amongst, the chances are you will get some very high quality players. As the sport becomes more popular, many young players take up badminton which
helps identify those that are extremely talented and others that might just be casual participants.
Tapping into this massive group of badminton players allows for China to identify some of the naturally talented players that are already showing tremendous skill and agility in the sport. When a big chunk of your population is playing badminton, it becomes
a lot easier to find top quality players that are capable of taking on extensive training and coaching to polish their talents.
Another very impressive key aspect of China’s dominance in badminton is the fact that the Government provides complete support to the sport. The Government of China provides almost everything for their athletes which allows for them to maintain their focus
on badminton and nothing else. Having the support of the Government ensures that only the top quality coaches and trainers are hired to give their players a tremendous competitive edge.
For any athlete it is imperative that they maintain focus. The Government of China handles everything for their badminton players to make sure the sport becomes a priority for them. Not to mention that the Chinese Government puts a tremendous amount of resources
behind their badminton program. Top quality facilities and equipment are provided to athletes so that they do not have to worry about fees and costs to train and participate in the sport.
In essence China has a tremendously large group to pick top athletes from; combined with the fact the Government puts massive support and takes care of everything for the players. These two key elements alone are not the only factors as to why China dominates
the sport of badminton.
If we look at the some of the top male and female players for China, a long list of highly successful players comes to mind. The recent 2012 London Olympics showed China’s dominance against the rest of the World when it comes to badminton. The Chinese managed
to win five gold medals, two silver and one bronze.
