Question:

Chinese food! Wife Cake vs Sun Cake and Rice dumplings!

Hey guys, I have grown up eating sun cake and I absolutely love it. Everything from the flaky crust to the sweet filling. Today my grandma bought me Wife Cake. I thought it was similar to the sun cake but it was absolutely terrible. The crust was soggy and soft and the filling was mushy and not flavorful. Can anyone tell me exactly what is a wife cake and how it differs from a sun cake? Thank you. And also about rice dumplings (zong zi) - I have had the long ones with just some long strands of pork and also the little ones that come with peanuts and sometimes mushroom shreds. I have heard that the long ones are China (Da-Loo) style and the shorter ones are Taiwan style. Can anyone confirm or provide some more knowledge? THANK YOU

  1. I never tried sun cake, but I tried the wife cake. It didn't taste pleasant. From wikipedia, it says it's made of winter melon or almond paste.

For the zong zi, in Canton, we have something similar to that. It's rice wrapped in a leaf. Inside is salted egg, roasted peanuts, chinese sausage, sun dried shrimp. It's a bit different than the taiwan version.
