Chinese people, how did you feel about the Olympic cyclists arriving in China with face masks?

natural but unnecessary reaction. i just visited china myself ( yes, i'm not native chinese) and came back 2 weeks ago. the PSI index isn't that good, but not that bad to the extent that one has to wear face masks. i think it's rather sickening actually. it's all part of the stereotype about china. remember, i come from a country with great air quality, and even i didn't find it that bad. so all the people who are not from a place with a good PSI index has no right to comment on the air quality of china.

My dad and I talked about it, and we felt that it is their choices that they wore the masks to show up in China. The fact is, it really doesn't matter that much. If they feel the need to protect themselves? Then so be it, but at the end of the day, is them who are making things difficult for themselves. I high doubt they are going to go everywhere in China with that mask on.

Yes, I feel offended.

I can understand if they wear masks during training or in olympics village, since there is indeed heavy air pollution in Beijing. I would have no problem if you wear the mask right after they get on the bus/taxi.

However, wearing the mask at the airport right after you arrive at a country is a different thing. You know this is the first appearance you show to the country and you know there will be reporters in the airport. You know you are making a statement about the country.

I bet they have been to other places that have worse air condition than the Beijing airport has. I bet they didn't wear a mask.

They should keep their masks on the whole time, including the Opening Ceremony and any award ceremonies so no one will ever see their face. They should also compete with the masks on.

They did it on purpose, which is pretty sick, only American cyclists wore masks, did you see Indian, Brazilian, South Africans wore that stuff?.....If I'm the host, I would've exclusively give rotten food to them, then said "sorry, we didn't mean it, you see, other athelets from other countries are fine, so it's just a mistake

If they have guts, just wear the masks for the whole 16 days and don't take off.

Yes, a bit!  It's a bad way to draw attractions. I agree with 鬼宿 but I won't serve them rotten food.

the cyclists said that it was totally unnecessary in an interview.

i was a bit surprised and then relieved that they realized that it was an empty cause... read this. it explains why beijing looks like it's heavily polluted.  it also explains the haze that surrounds it.
