Chinese shuttlers brush aside German team in the opening match of Sudirman Cup – Badminton News
Chinese shuttlers brushed aside the German team in the opening match of the Sudirman Cup 2011, at Qingdao, China, on Sunday May 22.
China won the match against Germany by a one-sided difference of 4-1.
Three-time world champion and 2008 Beijing Olympics Gold medallist, Lin Dan of China, played in his usual excellent fashion and thrashed Germany’s top seed, Marc Zwiebler, in straight games, without facing any trouble in both sets. The score of this Men’s
Singles encounter was 21-10 and 21-16.
Lin, who is regarded as the best shuttler in the entire history of the game, proved that he is still the best in the business.
Germany did find something to cheer about, as Juliane Schenk delivered a stunning performance by beating Wang Shixian, who is currently World Number One in the Women’s Singles rankings.
Juliane played at her best by employing superb smashes together with strong pushes, high clears and spinning net strokes. She was very happy after beating the World Number One in her home ground and in front of her own crowd. She emerged as the winner by
a 21-19 and 21-16 margin.
After the match, Juliane said, “I knew it would be challenging playing her on her home ground but I was ready for anything and everything she had for me. Perhaps I need to be more consistent on the world stage to win a big event but I think I have proven
I have the capabilities to beat any of the top players.”
Head coach of the Chinese team, Li Yongbo, while speaking about Wang’s performance, said, “Wang had some problems with her tactics and maybe she was too anxious, so there were some psychological problems. She told me that she was too anxious and hurried.”
He further added that he would help the great player recover from the bad patches and will work hard to bring the shuttler back to her best.
Yongbo said that he was satisfied with the performance of Lin, who remained ahead of Zwiebler in both sets of the match.
