Chinese teams win at 2011 AVC Beach Volleyball Tourney in Changsha
The 2011 Changsha Open staged exciting beach volleyball action from September 23-28 in Changsha, China. A total of 33 teams, 13 women’s and 20 men’s, participated in the tournament, while the fans got to see Asia’s top talent in beach volleyball during the
short span of the 6-day campaign. Home pairs took full advantage of the familiar beach conditions and overpowered the visiting squads as both gender categories were dominated by Chinese teams. In the women’s section, the dynamic pairing of Huang Ying and Yue
Yuan finished in the top slot. On the other hand, equally talented Peng and Chen Cheng exercised their authority in the men’s competition.
Women’s section
The women’s final match at Changsha Open was an all-China affair as both sides of the court were captured by local teams. Huang Ying/Yue Yuan stood tall on one side of the net, while the other side was occupied by Ding Jingjing and Wang Fan, who were quite
determined to gain a victory. The gold-medal match spanned over three sets and put the players of both sides to a real test of their skills. Jingjing/Fan set a great tone in the first frame and managed to claim a 21-16 victory. However, Ying and Yuan covered
the deficit in the second set and beat the opponent with an identical score of 21-16. The third set of the match imitated the see-saw battle as scores inched forward. Finally, Ying/Yuan pushed Jinging/Fan behind with a better combination of attack and defence
and seized the gold-medal.
In the bronze medal match, Thailand’s Tenpaksee Usa/Sannok Jarunee defeated China’s Zhang Changning/Ma Yuanyuan in straight sets of 2-0 (21-17, 21-18) and got hold of a third position in the tournament.
Men’s section
Chinese men’s teams also did an amazing job and secured gold for their country. The final match brought China’s Gao Peng/Chen Cheng in competition with the Iranian tandem of Farrok Paruiz and Mohammad Agha. Match lasted for 41 minutes as the home team won
after posting 2-1 (21-16, 16-21, 15-8) on the board. Peng and Cheng developed a good chemistry between them and easily managed to overcome their opponents in the first set. Iran dropped the opening set but came back from the loss to give a tough time to china
in the following set. They tied the game score at 1-1 and forced China to go into third set. It was great comeback for Iran in second set but they failed to continue with success in the third set. China downed them with a 7-point win in the third set and 2-1
in the match. The winning team grabbed the second gold-medal for China.
Indonesia’s Ardiyansah Andy and Darkuncoro Koko crossed New Zealand brothers Ben and Sam O’Dea in the men’s third-position match. The Kiwis exhibited a better performance and stunned the Indonesian duo with a 2-1 (19-21, 23-21, 15-11) victory in the match.
