I found a baby chipmunk in my yard and I cant find the mother.

I'm thinking about taking it as a pet but i have no idea how to take care of it. So how do you take care of a chipmunk.

  1. First bring it to the vet. It is great of you to do this, but for your safety and the safety for the animal and your family, take it to the vet. It might have ticks, or a different disease.

Ask your vet what they think. If they don't think it's a good idea, maybe instead of keeping it as a pet, you could raise it until it gets big enough to release it.

  2. My family has taken care of many wild, small animals as pets. A baby chipmunk may not be able to eat nuts, so your best bet would be to go to your local walmart or pet store and get some baby-cat milk and a small bottle and try that. Later on you may want to try Gerbil/hamster food. Handle the chipmunk often so it gets used to you taking care of it. Unbleached cotton and wood chip mix in a large birdcage/ferret cage or something of that sort. It may even enjoy a limb off a tree to climb when it gets older. As the chipmunk gets older it may like fruits and veggies, but not too many because it can give it diarrhea. Remember not to release it to the wild later on in life because it wont know how to take care of itself.

  3. Ya i would keep it as a pet, what you need to do is buy a big dog cage or something to keep it in and feed it nuts and water play with it, it will think that you are his parents

  4. Take it to the vet to see if it is healthy, then if you do some research about chipmunks I don't see why you couldn't keep it as a pet. But don't forget that it is an a wild animal which could carry diseases, and once its older it might want to leave you to be where it belongs in the wild.
