Chipped paint on my bumper, Cost?

On the bumper of my white 2004 cavalier there is a nasty scratch on it, well really its like a bad chip that's about as long as my whole hand in about 2 places. Before i got the car, my grandpa owned it and got into a little tiny wreck with another car, and it was red. Well on the chip of the car it chipped red! Is that like the stuff that was under the white paint or is that paint from that other red car he got into a tiny wreck with? But if i wanted to get that fixed, about how much would it cost me? I am only 16 and that's why i am curious. Thanks so much for helping me out in advance!

  1. More than likely a couple of hundred dollars. Do it yourself.

They aren't called bumpers anymore, they are called bumper covers.

They are made of fiberglass and can be sanded smooth. Use a sanding block with 120 grit paper, then when almost complete switch to 200 grit. Finally finish with 400 grit and then a little 800 steel wool. Make sure the area is clean and spray with a can of touch up paint available at your local autoo store or your chevrolet dealer. Do not wax for a few of weeks to let the paint cure

  2. Well if it's red underneath the white paint then it's entirely possible that the repair to the bumper from your grandpa's accident the repair shop used a used bumper from a salvage yard and just repainted it. It was probably originally red, they painted it white. A lot of insurance companies require body shops to use salvage parts whenever possible to keep cost down.

As far as cost, since you're seeing the red paint underneath it probably isn't just a surface scratch that can be buffed out, so the entire bumper will need to be repainted to make a flawless repair (as opposed to just a touch-up). The cost will likely be between $200 - $500, to repaint the entire bumper, depending on where you get it done. Shouldn't be more than $500 though.

  3. It really depends on what happen. If the car has been painted before then it could just be the paint under. But if you got hit by a red car then its the red car. If you are the one that wrecked it then you should have reported it, or they should have. Having a bumper JUST the bumper shouldnt cost more then 200-300 depending on where you are really taking it to. If you have full covereage you could claim that. My car got keyed and i claimed it and got 1600 bucks out of it. Really all depends. Just take it to your local paint shop and have it estimated. Thats always free :) Good Luck..."though you can always just do it your self"
