My husband and I are moving to Australia soon and I have seen a property in Chippendale that looks nice but seems very cheap. Can someone please tell me about the area. Is it the kind of place I can walk round safely at night or is there a reason why property is so cheap there?

  1. Its near Redfern where all the aboriginals drink booze then do crime. Not a nice area to live in, unfortunatly. You cannot safely walk round at night, there is a risk of being bashed or even murdered.

  2. Chippendale is ok, don't be misled by the Redfern factor. Redfern is not as hard core as it used to be, the police are pretty switched on to keeping the peace. Of course you would not go walking down the street at midnight wearing a bikini. But it's like any city, if you look for trouble- you will find it. I have traveled to many country's and I would consider Sydney to be very safe compared to others. Do your research though before buying. Sydney is great, I wouldn't like to live anywhere else. Trust me :-)

  3. well you get racists in the city who think that redfern is an Aboriginal hotspot- well there are, but it doesnt mean its the end of the world- some of my lecturers live there and walk to work- comfortably

but chippendale, i havent lived there, but i know people who do and its worked out for them

  4. PLEASE ignore what the others are saying about Redfern and the Aboriginals. It's not true. It's just a stereotype that all of them do that but they're great people no different to us.

It's a great place. Close to the city. However, this is one of the parts of the inner city where it mightn't be safe to walk around in during the night.

  5. I have stayed in Chippendale, but never lived there, so I will be happy to hear comments from locals.

Chippendale itself seemed OK to me, as long as you are not looking for a suburban experience with a 4 bedroom house and a backyard in a quiet neighbourhood. It is an inner city suburb with all the advantages and disadvantages that brings.

Some things you might like to check:

    * Is the property on a major road? Traffic noise may be a factor.

    * Is the property right next to the railway line? Again, noise may have brought the price down.

    * Chippendale is right next to Redfern which does not have a good reputation. Try to find out how close to the boundary with Redfern the property is. (I suspect that real estate agents are trying to sell a Redfern property by labelling it as Chippendale.)
