Chipper Jones’ five RBIs help Atlanta Braves defeat New York Mets 9-8 – MLB Update
Atlanta Braves’ third baseman, Chipper Jones had an extraordinary day with the bat as he went 3-for-4 and hit five RBIs including one run in the Braves’ 9-8 win against the New York Mets at Turner Field, Atlanta on June 16.
Despite this convincing win, the Braves lost the three-game series 2-1.
The Braves posted one run in the first inning to take an initial 1-0 lead when Jones was grounded out to first base and Jordan Schafer scored a single run. Jason Heyward advanced to third base at the end of the inning.
Second inning passed without any score but in the third inning, both sides added runs on the score-board. The Mets got off the mark by posting two runs while the Braves’ batters hit three runs to put their team on top with a 4-2 lead.
Justin Turner singled to right-field and Jose Reyes scored one run. The second run for the Mets was taken by Turner when Daniel Murphy hit a sacrifice fly towards centre-field. On the other side, Schafer and Heyward both posted one run while Jones struck
a three-run homer (414 feet) to right-field.
The Braves’ manager, Fredi Gonzalez commented on Heyward and said, “The next thing I know Heyward's hands are in the air without a bat. I said, 'What's going on?'”
During the fourth inning, the Braves scored two runs to advance their lead 6-2. Eric Hinske and Schafer both played pretty well in the fourth as they put together two runs. Later on, the Mets’ batters stepped on the gas and hit four runs during the fifth
inning to tie the game 6-6.
Carlos Beltran, Turner and Jason Bay each posted three runs while Scott Hairston homered (397 feet) towards left-field to lift the potential of the Mets. In the sixth inning, the pitchers did not permit any run.
The Braves’ starter, Mike Minor was much expensive as he pitched just over four innings with an ERA of 5.47 and allowed five runs on seven hits including five earned runs. He permitted three walks on 95 pitches and had three strike-outs.
In the seventh and eighth inning, the Mets scored two runs collectively to take an 8-6 lead. Beltran and Angel Pagan both added runs to boost up the confidence of the Mets. However, the Braves again levelled the game 8-all during the ninth inning when Heyward
posted one run and Brooks Conrad homered (424 feet) to right-field.
Conrad said, “For us to at least scratch one out of the series, it was a hard-fought win for us.”
The Braves went ahead 9-8 in the additional 10th inning when Diory Hernandez scored a tie breaking run.
