Chipper Jones sees Atlanta Braves win against New York Mets in his last game at Turner Field-MLB
In his final home-stand, Atlanta Braves’ third baseman Chipper Jones helps the team in beating the New York Mets. The game was his last at Turner Field in the regular season. In light of this it held great significance for Jones.
Throughout the series that has completed now, fans in great numbers thronged the stadium to see Jones for the last time in a home-stand.
Before the beginning of the series, Jones Tweeted that he will play the matches uninterrupted as opposed to resting after every fifth game.
Until the series against the Mets, he has been appearing in the matches intermittently in order to make sure his surgically-repaired knee does not suffer. As per the plan, he has not been starting six games in a row.
However, in his farewell series at Turner Field, Jones made an exception.
He actually wanted to enjoy every moment of playing in his home stadium. In front of his parents and the huge crowd that gathered to watch him, Jones fascinated them with his legendry flair for the last time.
However, far from hitting massive home-runs, he did not perform well in the series. Although he earned the honour and the privilege of the big-wigs of the game acknowledging him in the farewell ceremony, he struggled to connect hits.
“I really wanted to finish the game,” Jones said. “I told all the fans via twitter at the beginning of the week that I was going to start every game. I obviously didn’t know how things were going to finish, but I never want to come out of a game.”
Tears appeared in Jones’ eyes as the last game concluded.
He has experienced the best moments of his life in the stadium.
“It means a lot to me to have gone 35-40 years from the backyard in Pierson, Fla. and here we are standing in a big league stadium in Atlanta. And I have my own weekend. That’s bringing it full circle,” Jones said.
With the series wound up, Jones will be eying on helping the Braves in the upcoming matches in particular in the playoffs. It will be interesting to see as to how he lifts his team offensively.
