Chipper Jones sparks as Atlanta Braves defeat New York Mets 6-5 – Game 1: MLB Update
Atlanta Braves’ third baseman, Chipper Jones had a brilliant day with the bat as he went 2-for-5 with an average of .283 and hit single RBI including one run in the Braves’ 6-5 victory over the New York Mets at Citi Field, New York on September 8.
Both teams executed particularly well in the first inning as Braves smashed three runs while Mets blasted four quick runs to get a 4-3 lead at the bottom of first inning. Jones and Dan Uggla both added two initial runs for Braves when Freddie Freeman drove
a double-run shot towards deep centre-field. Later on, Freeman advanced to third base on a throwing error.
The second run for the Braves was taken by Freeman when Martin Prado reached to second base on an infield single. On the other hand, Jason Bay hit a solo homer (418 feet) towards left-field while Lucas Duda, David Wright and Angel Pagan each singled to complete
a four-run campaign for Mets. In the second inning, the batters failed to show their abilities against the fastballs.
Alex Gonzalez popped out, Michael Bourn struck-out and Mike Minor ground out without taking even a single run during the second inning. Similarly, Mets’ catcher Ronny Paulino flied out to right-field, Ruben Tejada ground out to third base and Chris Schwinden
ground out to the pitcher at the bottom of second inning.
In the third inning, Braves went ahead 5-4 by adding two runs to their respective score-card. Jones struck a one-run homer (357 feet) to right-field. Freeman posted the second or leading run when Jason Heyward singled off centre-field and Prado moved to
third base. Braves remained on top until the seventh inning as the batters struggled in the middle innings.
Minor pitched five innings and gave up four earned runs, one homer, one walk, four runs and seven hits with an ERA of 4.32. He had just two strike-outs on his 95 pitches. During the eighth inning, Braves added one run to raise their lead while Mets also
scored a single run to reduce their lead 6-5 at the bottom of the eighth inning.
Bourn was hit by a pitch and Prado posted a single run. Conversely, Wright scored the last run for the Mets when Nick Evans hit a sacrifice fly to right-field. However, Braves took a 1-0 lead in the two-game series at Citi Field.
