I grow chives, but I don't have enough to do with em, (I use them in cooking pork and chicken and on potato's but they grow like crazy so I have like 4 square feet of garden dedicated to them) but I thought I could substitute the chives for scallions in soups and scallion pancakes. will this work?

  1. Oh yes, you most certainly can!  Your home grown chives will have a slightly spicier flavor though, but maybe a little change in your every day recipes can inspire you try new dishes with your chives.  Last year when I had my herb garden and they grew faster than I could use them during season, I passed them out as little gifts to everyone and I was surprised how many people asked for more!  You could also dry them out and save them for up to 4 months.  I use chives like people use parsley, I just love them so much. Wish you could send me some!

  2. Maybe but it is not the same taste. If you have a surplus then just cut em up and dry them and store away for the future or give out as gift to some one who appreciates home grown goodies.

  3. That will work, but they are far milder.

  4. Should work just fine.  May not have an identical flavor but they will still be great.

  5. Yes why not, they are from the onion family. Make the recipe yours by a little twist.

  6. Are you using chives in place of scallions or scallions in place of chives?

Scallions have a slightly milder and sweeter flavor than chives, but I really like chives a lot.

I can see using them interchangeably and still obtain delicious results... especially if you're replacing the scallions with chives.

  7. Certainly!  Great idea!

  8. Another idea: Freeze your fresh chives in a freezer bag, use when needed.
