Chloe Sutton secures Women’s 1500m freestyle gold: Day one – 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim
Chloe Sutton of Mission Viejo secured gold medal of the Women’s 1500m freestyle on first day of the 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte on Thursday, May 10.
Sutton faced tough battle from her strongest competitor and her team-member, Ashley Twichell throughout the discipline but with her strong commitment, she succeeded in securing gold medal of the event.
With her utter determination and powerful strokes, she kept her challenger at a marginal distance in the first five rounds of the race as she posted a time of 5 minutes and 29.68 seconds.
Her alluring effort remained just 0.11 seconds ahead of 22-year-old Twichell, who covered the equivalent distance with the timing of 5 minutes and 29.79 seconds.
Sutton continued her nerve-wrecking pace in the subsequent rounds, where she succeeded in adding enhancing her lead marginally and posted a time of 10 minutes and 59.08 seconds.
With her impeccable effort, she remained in a lead of 0.18 seconds over Twichell, who completed her initial 1000 metres of the swim by clocking a time of 10 minutes and 59.26 seconds.
In the meantime, the crowd experienced ruthless aggression of 20-year-old Sutton in the last five rounds, where she cemented her place on the victory stand for gold medal by submitting a phenomenal time of 16 minutes and 23.96 seconds.
Her effort remained almost half a minute slower from the world record of 15 minutes and 42.54 seconds, made by Kate Ziegler of The Fish at the 2007 World Championship.
The champion was trailed by Twichell, who fell short of almost two seconds and seized the victory stand for silver medal by reporting a nice time of 16 minutes and 25.25 seconds.
The second position holder was chased by Andreina Pinto of Gator Swim Club, who stayed nearly thirteen-seconds apart and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by submitting a time of 16 minutes and 38.64 seconds.
In addition, the championship will continue for three more days and will conclude on May 13 after the completion of all listed events in Men and Women’s category.
