Chlorine - swimming effects on hair question??

I'm starting to swim, for exercise, again....after several years. The last time I was an avid swimmer, I was a preadolescent. Now, I'm 28. And more worried about the effects of chlorine on my hair.

Short of wearing one of those doofy swimming caps, what can I do to protect my hair?? THANKS!!

  1. the make special shampoo used for after you get out of the pool, but regular shampoo works just fine also. and it usually doesn't have that much of an effect on your hair unless your swim constantly for a long period of time.

  2. http://about.pricegrabber.com/search_gen...

These products are ideal for "swimmers hair" by effectively eliminating "chlorine green" and other pool and spa chemicals from the hair.

  3. The only real way to do so is to use a bathing cap. Apply a thin strip of petroleum jelly around the edges of the cap to minimize the amount of water penetrating to the hair beneath. If using a swim cap is unsuitable for you, then you have to accept that your hair will need some treatment to help neutralize the chlorine levels to which it is exposed. This doesn’t mean that you have to shampoo the hair at the end of every day, but you should be using a conditioner on the hair to help neutralize it. Look for a good swimmer’s shampoo and conditioner from your local beauty supply shop. This should allow you to neutralize the chlorine without shampooing daily. (Simply shampoo every few days.)

    hope this helped!

  4. Just make sure you wash yr hair directly after swimming. Sometimes, if yr hair is light enough, the chlorine can turn it green after a certain amount of time.

  5. i hear that if you wet your hair, pull it back in a ponytail and rub conditioner over it..it will protect it.  other wise it will dry out and may turn yellow/green

  6. If you wet your hair with regular water before you get in the pool, your hair will absorb the regular water instead of the pool water. A cap would be better though, especially if your hair is colored.

  7. From what i understand the chlorine can turn your hair greenish if you've recently had color work done to your hair.

  8. What I would try is:

    1. Before u swim, rinse ur hair w/ cold water

    2. After ur done rinse hair again and/or take a shower

  9. I know it sounds gross but put vasiline in the roots of your hair before you swim when you swim it goes down your hair and keeps it healthy it does come out easy, keeps the color and keeps it protected too

  10. Wash and grease it after you use the pool if you're not willing to wear a swimming hat. I don't blame you I wouldn't wear 1 either.

  11. Nothing really.  Just wash your hair really well in the shower.

  12. ya chlorine can damage your hair. it streaked my blonde friend's hair slightly green plus it can make it very dry. I would buy a special shampoo conditioner for swimmers. also right after you get out of the pool rinse your hair off with regular water from a shower. haha and i like goofy swim caps!! haha jk
