I have a 3 month old chocolate lab.I'm trying to teach her to "shake" hands. Are labs hard to train? She does know how to "sit" and she is learning "stay".Also is it true Labs mentally stay puppies for a couple of years? My mom always told me I couldn't get a lab because there stupid.I want to prove her wrong because Mocha seems smart but im starting to wonder...I understand she is just a puppy but she seems kinda slow.

  1. its easy talk to him everyday give him example every time he comes enar it give him a treat

  2. i like turtles

  3. My lab is smarter than some people I know. I had him saying (barking) "I love you at" 4 months (it could have been I'm hungry but I will go with the one that sounds better.) They are very motivated by food so they are one of the easier dogs to train. Just remember: don't repeat yourself too much, and when you are teaching a trick tell her to do the thing you want her to do while she is actually doing it, so she knows that's what you want her to do. (or just google some dog training videos)

  4. your mom is wrong. they are one of the smartest and easiest to train. i taught my choc lab pup to sit, shake, lay down, roll over, and stay in 4 days. the best way is with a treat. tell her shake and grab her paw. then give a treat. persistence is key. she'll get it soon. i love my choc lab. best of time with yours!!!!

  5. I have a 2 year old Choco boy and he is very intelligent and sometimes stubborn. I wouldn't say he has stayed a puppy for 2 years but he is very playful and loves to run and play in the water.

Labs in general are definately not stupid. There is a very good reason they are the dog most often chosen to be trained to assist the handicapped and become search and rescue dogs. My dog is an excellent retriever, not only for things you toss, but also things that are hidden or lost.

Your puppy is very cute too, a true Choco baby!

  6. labs are very smart it will take awhile to train her. find some books on dog training and she'll be fine.

  7. A three month old lab can do more then a two year old child.

He can eat on his own, go potty alone, sit on command, what do you want?  Labs are very intelligent.  You do have to train slowly because he is still very much a baby.  Give him time.

My lab was doing handshakes by command at about 6 months.

Yes they are very active until about 2 years, take this time to play, and make games out of training.  Treats and praise works well for a good job, and a squirt bottle and a firm NO is used for bad behavior.

Bad behavior is not getting the trick wrong, but chewing on a shoe or furniture.

It will not be long at all when you will be needing a lot of chew toys, if they don't have something for teething, they will get it where they can find it.  Don't confuse that with being smart or not.
