Choi Yun-Hee emerges as new national Pole Vault record holder – Korean National Championships
The athletics hub of Korea witnessed the 65th edition of the Korean National Championships, just before the important event of the IAAF World Championships, which is to commence on August 27 and conclude on September 4, Daegu.
The three-day event which lasted from June 9-11, observed Choi Yun-Hee, the 25-year old track and field athlete from South Korea, succeed in marking a new national record of 4.40m. She is known for her specialisation in women’s pole vault competitions.
The previous national record, marked by Lim Eun-Ji, the 22-year old South Korean pole vaulter back in 2009, stood at 4.35m. Appearing in this year’s contest, Eun-Ji observed an enviable 3.80m.
Yun-Hee had the privilege of representing South Korea at the international level, where she bagged a medal while participating in the 2009 Asian Athletics Championships. The young girl who stole the limelight after an emphatic performance, has the record
of maintaining the winning streak of pole vault at the Korean National Sports Festival for six long years (from 2004 to 2010).
On the men’s side, spectators at the stadium where the Daegu World Championships will commence in the last week of August, observed the rare appearance of US based pole vaulter, Kim Yoo-Suk, who had been on a visit to Korea. Despite of being the only athlete
of the discipline who has been unbeaten for the last nine seasons, Yoo-Suk has bagged only two career titles so far.
While appearing in the Korean National championships, the 29-year old easily cleared 5.30m and managed to carve a narrow victory against young stellar performer, Jin Min-Sup, who also cleared the 5.30m mark only to set an emphatic personal best.
Other disciplines where prominent performances were displayed comprised of the Men’s Javelin Throw, where Park Tae Myong marked his dominance for hitting the mark of 77.91m. On the women’s side, Kim Kyung-Ae emerged as winner for her best throw of 58.24m.
In the decathlon, Kim Kun-Woo hit the seasonal best and earned 7755 points, while in the 110m hurdles, Tae-Kyong took the title home for finishing the race in 14.12 seconds, which culminated in earning him the fourth national title for formidable runner.
