Question:

Choice Points: Can you add a family member as a user to your acct?

I recently created an acct with the Choice Hotels line (comfort suites, sleep inns, etc..) because a friend and I are taking a trip this summer and a family member said that I could use their points but would need an acct with my name on it. After creating the acct I see where you can't "transfer" points even through a will or divorce decree (who'd haggle over hotel points in a divorce anyway?) So, my question is can my relative add me to their account as a valid user and will they just issue me a card on that account?

  1. Immediate family can use your Choice Privileges points.  You do not need your own account.  The family member with the points must make the reservation for you through Central Reservations at 800-424-6423.  Or, they can make the reservation online at www.choicehotels.com (trust me, it is easier just to call).  After they make the reservation under their account using their points, they will call and let the hotel directly know that it is an immediate family memeber who is using the points, not the actual card holder.  It is nice, however to have an account of your own, so in case you use have to travel out of town, you are earning points towards free nights, gift certificates, and much more.

As for if a family member dies, someone will need to call Choice Privileges directly and talk to a member of the staff about what to do.  Most generally, they will ask for documentation of the deceased at the least.  If you get married and need to change names, you will have to fax over a copy of the Marriage License for proof of name change.

Keep in mind, Choice Privileges has had many people try to get ahold of other people's points.  In a way, points are like money and are used to purchase rooms.  There are always those out there that want to steal from someone.
