Obviously, the Jeeps but are there any alternatives? SUV's? How about sedans? like the Dodge Chargers?

  1. First of all, I am not really a fan of the modern Jeeps. GM hasn't done a very good jog of keeping the quality up after they took over from AMC. If you can find an older one (1987 or earlier) in good shape, that would be a good buy!

As for general camping, If you are into small trucks the Ford Ranger 4X4 is reliable but not too great on gas mileage.

In the SUV class, the Dodge durango is ok. Ford escape, escape hybrid, and explorer are also more than adequate for most camping and exploring.

Toyota and Nissan are both well known for good quality small trucks and SUVs.

You want some fairly high clearance, but not a lifted, vehicle for most camping in 4X4 country. At least 9" at the lowest point.

As for sedans, again clearance will dictate where you can go. I do take my Buick Skylark camping in the Nevada and California wilderness but I have to be very careful and use some good judgment on the back country trails.

  2. You can go car camping in any car, but to get to the best spots, your best bet is a 4WD with high clearance. Although I did take my Honda Accord on a 4x4 road once.

  3. I have a Subaru Forester I take camping and fishing.  I also use  Heavy Duty Roof Cargo Basket and also use http://www.jcwhitney.com/MASTERBUILT-HIT... with SIDE RAIL KITS FOR HITCH HAUL® CARRIERS
