Chong Wei's will give us opportunity to win Olympic gold medal, says Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery
Malaysian badminton king Lee Chong Wei is still the nation’s biggest hope in the London Olympics as Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery stated that maestro will fetch a gold medal in the mega event.
London Games will be in full swing from July 27, 2012 and Malaysia’s stakes came under threat with Chong Wei’s sudden injury.
World Number one shuttler hurt his ankle while facing Peter Hoeg Gade in recently concluded Thomas Cup Finals and it turned in to a huge blow to his Olympic preparations.
However, Sports minister Ahmad Shabery hoped that the badminton ace will be back on his feet to bring country’s first gold medal in the Olympics.
He said, "Chong Wei's injury is not serious and he will give us the opportunity to win a gold medal in the Olympics."
According to initial reports, it was not fractured and Chong Wei was supposed to resume his activities in four weeks.
Later, National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz also lessened the worries by declaring it a minor tendon injury after a second MRI report.
The medical team also announced that there will not be any surgery and Malaysian campaigner will restore his fitness in three to four weeks.
Ahmad Shabery was happy that this injury did not jeopardise their prospects. He presented positive side of the picture that Chong Wei did not hurt himself in final stages of Thomas Cup as it could have put his Olympic appearance in danger.
He said, "Luckily the injury occurred early in the Thomas Cup because injury at the later stage would have taken a longer time to heal instead of the expected four weeks."
Moreover, Ahmad Shabery also requested nation to pray for their hero’s speedy recovery so that he can lead national squad in most respectable badminton event.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) also vowed to provide every medical facility to get its prime shuttler back on track in this race for glory.
Meanwhile, the medical board has suggested three-step recovery process. They will stimulate the recovery by taking healthy tissues from his body and then injecting them to damaged area.
