Chong Wei Feng nails Men’s Singles title at Selangor Open – Badminton news
Malaysia’s young shuttler Chong Wei Feng proved that he is the best shuttler in the nation's back-up squad as he nailed Men’s Singles title at Selangor Open in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday, February 26.
In the title match, Wei Feng overpowered Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin after putting up a thrilling show and emerged as the winner of this domestic tournament.
Wei Feng, who is the World Number 57 in Men’s Singles world standings, showed his courage and delivered wonderful performance and also shut the mouth of critics by grabbing the title.
In the final contest, Wei Feng lost the opening set against Iskandar with a one-sided margin of 12-21. However, he strongly fought back in the second game by playing to his maximum potential and took it with a 21-10 score on the board.
In the deciding set, Wei Feng remained on track as he did not let his rival to dominate the rallies. He remained successful in taking the final set with a tremendous margin of 21-14.
The overall result of this Men’s Singles final contest was 12-21, 21-10 and 21-14.
Wei Feng was dropped from the national squad for Thomas Cup Preliminary Round, which ended in Macau last week. However, his strong show at the home tournament proved the selectors and critics wrong.
The World Number One Lee Chong Wei did not participate in the Men’s Singles category which helped Wei Feng to win the title.
He said, “Chong Wei has dominated the local scene for 10 years and I made full use of his absence here. In a way, I am glad he has given us the chance to come good. It feels good to win.”
While talking about his performance in the final contest against Iskandar, Wei Feng said that he failed to play well in the first game but he found a good momentum on the right time and won the remaining both sets.
He said, “I got off to a slow start against Iskandar and made too many mistakes. I picked up in the second game and fortunately, found my rhythm to take command of the game.”
Wei Feng left for Germany yesterday to participate in the German Open Grand Prix Gold, starting from tomorrow on February 28.
