Chong Wei Feng’s chances to deliver in Badminton Asia Championships 2011 low
Malaysia’s Chong Wei Feng, who won the men’s singles title in Kuala Lumpur recently, has meagre chances to deliver the same performance in the upcoming Badminton Asia Championships 2011.
The Malaysian is on the very tough side of the draw of the event starting from 19 April in Chengdu, China.
The winner of the Kuala Lumpur Open 2011, Wei Feng is set to meet the world number four, Chen Long of China. The Chinese is the second seed in men’s singles draw as the world number one, Lee Chong Wei and world number two, Taufik Hidayat are missing the
event.
The Malaysian joined the Badminton Association of Malaysia as a back-up shuttler in 2004. For the last six years, Wei Feng has been training hard but failed to win any major event at domestic or international level until 2010.
He managed to win the local event Kuala Lumpur Open but there were no elite players in this event and he played against the same level he himself belongs to. Wei Feng will meet the Chinese for the first time in any international event.
“I have not played against Chen Long before. I have to admit that he is a far superior player and it will be very difficult to upset him,” said Wei Feng.
Wei Feng knows that Chen Long has the support of the home ground and home crowd, but the Malaysian is determined to put all what he has in the match.
Malaysia’s national coach for men’s singles, Rashid Sidek is well aware of the little strength of Malaysian shuttlers against the top athletes of the world in the men’s singles draw of the tournament.
“The draw is tough for them. If any one of them make it to the third round or quarter-finals, it is already a bonus,” said Rashid.
All the top athletes of China are participating in this home event including Lin Dan, Chen Long, Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin.
