Chong Wei believes Malaysia Open win is a timely boost for him – Badminton News
The badminton maestro Lee Chong Wei proved his supremacy in Malaysia Open GP Gold and he termed this triumph a confidence booster after a short troubling period.
World Number one shuttler was looking to get back on track after his shoulder injury in All England Open and he desperately wanted an international title especially after his recent failure in Yonex Sunrise India Open.
Chong Wei successfully defended his honour in Malaysia Open as he toppled the Indonesian campaigner Sony Dwi Kuncoro in final match of the event.
Though, the Malaysian ace was not in his prime touch as he had to go all the way to three grueling sets but he managed to hit the mark by registering his class in final two sets.
He was bit scratchy in the beginning as he lost 17-21 to the Indonesian shuttler but he tipped the scale in his favour by winning following two games with commendable totals of 21-18 and 21-10.
Chong Wei looked relieved after this victory as he stated that this win in home event has boosted his confidence which was shattered after his failure in India Open.
He said, "I'm very happy as the win has restored my confidence after losing at India Open Badminton Championships."
The Indian event was his comeback tournament after a short absence from the arena due to shoulder injury.
However, the defending Champion Chong Wei could not rise to the occasion and knelt down against a lower ranked Korean shuttler Shon Wan Ho in the title match.
Now with his elevated performance in Malaysia Open, he has given a strong statement that he is ready to shoulder his responsibility in prestigious events in near future.
Thomas Cup Finals will be his next challenge which is going to be staged in Wuhan, China from May 20 and he will strive hard to perform exceptionally well in this esteemed team event.
Malaysia will be banking on Chong Wei for an Olympic medal in London and there is possibility that he will pull out his name from couple of less important tournaments just to avoid injuries before the mega event.
