Chong Wei claims Men’s Singles crown in 2013 India Open – Badminton News
Malaysia’s ace shuttler Lee Chong Wei served the notice of his dominance in Yonex Sunrise India Open and claimed the top spot on victory stand on Sunday, April 28, 2013.
Though, he faced a lower ranked Japanese player Kenichi Tago but still it was not an easy ride to victory for him. He had to sweat hard in this tussle which prolonged to 62 minutes in local badminton arena of New Delhi.
World Number one Lee Chong Wei won the opening and ending segments of this showdown with 21-15 and 21-17 total respectively. Meanwhile, the young but spirited Kenichi Tago also showed his class in the middle of battle and won second set with 21-18 score.
The Malaysian maestro launched a brisk attack and established a decent lead immediately in the beginning of first set. He did not squander his effort in next couple of rallies and doubled his total by pocketing many valuable points.
The Japanese shuttler was not prepared for such an intensive invasion as he remained at the lower end all the way to game point situation.
Chong Wei mounted pressure by registering an unassailable figure of 11 and then capitalised this psychological edge to place a winning margin of 21-15.
However, there was a twist in the story as Kenichi Tago showed a transformed character in next game and turned his rival’s plan into dust.
He did not show any sign of bewilderment even after the first set loss and managed to bring the contest to right balance.
He raised his chances of success by prevailing in the establishing rallies and then relished full benefits of his lead to place a respectable total before interval.
Though, he blundered in few back-to-back rallies and allowed his challenger to narrow the gap but then some productive strokes helped him to register a concluding score of 21-18.
The decider proved real test for both contenders as neither of them could enjoy a permanent lead until the final moments.
The game kept swinging between them until third quarter of set and this nerve-racking set ended when Chong Wei put a winning total of 21-17. With this win, he earned the right to raise Men’s Singles trophy in India Open.
