Chong Wei determined to overcome every hurdle en-route to glory – London Olympics Update
Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced preliminary draws of London Olympics and Lee Chong Wei is positive to escort his country to glory by exceeding every contender in the mega event.
The Malaysian maestro is top seeded shuttler of the tournament and he has been placed in Group A with Ville Lang from Finland.
World Number two shuttler is not ready to take any opponent lightly as he stated that every match is important for him.
Chong Wei looked confident while claiming that he will have a smooth ride throughout the mega event as he just need to surpass one challenger at a time.
He said, “It doesn’t matter who it is as past records mean nothing in the Olympics. It’s pointless talking about potential opponents when I need to clear one hurdle at a time.”
The players have been divided into 16 Groups and only group winners will earn the right to advance into the elimination round.
Chong Wei will not find any difficulty in overpowering lower ranked opponents in the opening round and his first prominent competitor will be Simon Santoso in pre quarter-finals of the event.
However, he vowed to stay focused to his game and declared that despite of having an edge he will put his best against the Indonesian campaigner.
He said, “I’m expected to play Simon Santoso in the last 16 and although the stats are in my favour, I will have to give it my best.”
If the Malaysian ace makes it to the quarter-finals then he is expected to meet Japanese shuttler Kenichi Tago and the win will pit him against World Number three Chen Long in the semi-final round.
Meanwhile, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) high performance director James Selvaraj declared that draw was just according to their expectations.
Though, he admitted that they were hoping Chen Jin against them in final rounds but in same breath he gave his vote of confidence to Chong Wei by declaring him superior to Chinese trio.
He said, “Chen Jin would have been the better option but we’ll just have to deal with it. Chong Wei is ready for action, whoever it is he has to meet.”
The Olympic silver medallist Chong Wei will be gracing the court after a two-month absence and badminton world is looking forward to see him swinging arms in coming London Games.
