Chong Wei will do his best in London, says BAM president Nadzmi – Badminton News
World Number two Lee Chong Wei is suffering from an ankle injury but president of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Datuk Seri Nadzmi Salleh still believes that nothing can stop the maestro from excelling in the 2012 London Olympics.
The mega event will start from July 27, 2012 and Chong Wei was regarded as the biggest hope for a gold medal before falling prey to an ankle injury in the Thomas Cup Finals last month.
Now, when London Games are about a month’s distance the Malaysian ace has not started his normal training yet which puts a big question mark on country’s stakes.
However, national body’s president Seri Nadzmi is confident that his players will not draw a blank. He also briefed that they are not pushing Chong Wei hard for a medal as the badminton king realises his responsibility of escorting the country to glory.
He said, "Chong Wei's injury is unexpected and we don't want to put any added pressure on him. Chong Wei will do his best in London. We are expecting the medal can be achieved by any of them."
Moreover, he also commended Chong Wei’s unflinching determination during this bad patch and hoped that he will swing his arms in coming edition of Olympics with same strength of mind.
Though, Nadzmi admitted that his ill-timed injury has jeopardised their prospects but still he stated that badminton king cannot be ruled out of the competition.
He said, "Chong Wei has created an uncertainty and this is what makes sports exciting. He is a strong character and you can never count anyone out."
Meanwhile, BAM is sending national campaigners to University of Bath where they will start training for the Olympics from July 12, 2012.
Chong Wei is expected to join his team-mates after an eight-week absence from the court and Datuk Nadzmi looked positive about superstar’s comeback as he still has reasonable time to get in shape.
He said, "There are another three weeks before the team leave for training at the University of Bath and we will have to see how Chong Wei recovers."
However, it will be interesting to see that how well he prepares himself in just two weeks to compete world class Chinese rivals like reigning Olympic Champion Lin Dan and danger men Chen Long and Chen Jin.
