I wish to peruse a hobby that satisfies the following conditions:

1. Should have a connection with nature (for e.g. field trips).

2. Should have a scientific background and value.

3. Should be able to perform at all geographic locations, including the place I am from; the Netherlands.

4. Exciting, novel and most importantly, economical.

In addition, it is desirable to have economic value in the long run, though not mandatory. I understand it is a difficult question, thus my posting to the community!. If you have been carrying out such hobbies , kindly help me out by listing them.

  1. My father studied geology for a while, and used to go out to collect rocks and fossils. I'd go with him when I was a kid. Fun, outdoors, science - related. Not sure how much geographic variety there is in the Netherlands, though, so you'd have to research. We ended up doing a lot of hiking up and down mountains. Doesn't really cost anything accept for transportation. You can combine it with other things like camping, hiking, fishing. And I guess you could always sell your finds on eBay if you are looking to make money. (??)

By the way, congratulations on your wins over Italy and France this week. Wow! (And PS, I live in A'dam)

  2. You could try:

crocheting or knitting --- use natural yarns or threads

    star gazing

    Bird watching

    Photography

Writing a book about your field trips.

Just a few ideas for you.

  3. Running is your perfect match, all you need is a pair of good shoes and the will to survive. Physiology is fairly scientific don't you think? You can run almost anywhere, you will be outside, it is exciting and free.
