Choosing motor size?

I just bought a 1970 john boat and trailer and i'm trying to get it into the water but I need a trolling motor and I would like an outboard motor. I won't have more than 2 people in the boat at once with a total weight of about 400 pounds and i'm on a budget.

  1. Do we take it you intend to use it on a lake or other relatively calm water?  The I'd suggest you google "trolling motors", there are many about of varying powers.  As far as a conventional outboard goes, 3 - 4hp would probably be fine, not fast but it'll get you there economically.

  2. There are many variables which you didn't give such as size of boat, displacement etc.  There are coast guard specs for max motor size and there may or may not be a spec plate on the hull which tells max motor size that can be used.  All that aside, it will also depend on if you need to go very fast to your favorite fishing spot or want to save alot of money and cruise at a slower pace all day on minimal fuel expense.  For a small jon boat I would have a 5 hp, but that's just me being frugal.  I have seen much larger engines used than that. Since you mentioned you are on a budget, I would recommend checking your local craigslist online. There are many great deals on small motors both trolling and gas. I have gotten trolling motors at yard sales for 10 dollars.  Hope this helps.
